New to NXT 2.0 release is a colour sensor that can be used to let the robot you build determine colours before acting on that information along with the ability to control it via a PC or Mac with the accompanying software.

With Bluetooth still present, users will get the chance to build four new models from the 619 piece set; a new version of the robot - Alpha Rex, Robocator - a fierce looking crocodile, Shooter bot - a robot that shoots balls, and Colour sorter - yes a robot that sorts coloured balls.

Other new features include the inclusion of ten robot instructions from the software rather than two as in the previous model.

The heart of the new system is the NXT 2.0 brick, an autonomous 32-bit LEGO microprocessor that can be programmed using a PC, or for the first time in the retail offering, a Mac. After building their robots, users create a program within easy-to-use yet feature-rich software, powered by LabVIEW from National Instruments.

LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT is the second generation of robotics products from The LEGO Group, which launched the first generation of LEGO MINDSTORMS in 1998 with the LEGO MINDSTORMS Robotic Invention System.

LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT was launched in 2006, with the first version of the robotics toolkit, the NXT 1.0, which was a tremendous success, introducing entry-level robotics to children from age 10 and up, with state-of-the-art hardware and easy-to-use programming software.

In just 30 minutes young robot creators can build and program their first working robot.
After building their robots, users create a program within easy-to-use yet feature-rich software, powered by LabVIEW from National Instruments. Downloading programs to an invention is easy. Users with Bluetooth®-enabled computer hardware can transfer their programs to the NXT wirelessly, or anyone can use the included USB 2.0 cable to connect their computer to the NXT for program transfer. The robot then takes on a life of its own, fully autonomous from the computer. The inclusion of Bluetooth technology also extends possibilities for controlling robots remotely, for example, from a mobile phone or PDA. When LEGO MINDSTORMS launched, we fundamentally changed the way people viewed LEGO building and play and helped spark the trend of affordable and attainable consumer robotics, says Jurgen Vig Knudstorp, CEO, LEGO Group. “Eight years later, we're ready to improve upon the single best-selling product in the company's history. We've developed the new toolset with expanded components and capabilities to challenge our existing community of dynamic fans. Meanwhile, the system's new software, design and 30-minute quick-start program are geared toward recruiting a new, younger generation of robotics enthusiasts.

Price:£ 179.99 Special Price:£ 169.99

You can also use it to make your robot avoid obstacles, sense and measure distance, and detect movement.

The Ultrasonic Sensor measures distance in centimeters and in inches. It is able to measure distances from 0 to 255 centimeters with a precision of +/- 3 cm.

The Ultrasonic Sensor uses the same scientific principle as bats: it measures distance by calculating the time it takes for a sound wave to hit an object and return – just like an echo.

Large sized objects with hard surfaces return the best readings. Objects made of soft fabric or that are curved [like a ball] or are very thin or small can be difficult for the sensor to detect.

*Note that two or more Ultrasonic Sensors operating in the same room may interrupt each other's readings.

Test it!
Test the Ultrasonic Sensor's ability to measure distance:

1. Connect
the Ultrasonic Sensor to the NXT
2. Select the View
submenu on the NXT. Select
the Ultrasonic Sensor
icon and the port where you've connect the sensor.
3. Measure
the distance to an object. For example, move your hand closer to the sensor and watch the readings change.

Try Me

The NXT comes with a Try Me function. Connect an Ultrasonic Sensor to port 4 of the NXT and select the Try Me submenu on the NXT to test your Ultrasonic Sensor. You'll get a fun reaction.

- Built-in Rotation Sensor
- Each motor has a built-in Rotation Sensor. - This lets you control your robot's movements precisely.
- The Rotation Sensor measures motor rotations in degrees or full rotations [accuracy of +/- one degree].
- One rotation is equal to 360 degrees, so if you set a motor to turn 180 degrees, its output shaft will make half a turn.

The built-in Rotation Sensor in each motor also lets you set different speeds for your motors [by setting different power parameters in the software]. Try running the motors at different speeds.

Test it! Test the built-in Rotation Sensor's ability to measure distance:

1. Connect a motor to the NXT
2. Select the VIEW submenu on the NXT
3. Select the Motor Rotations icon.
4. Select the port where you have connected the motor
5. Attach a wheel to the motor and measure the rotations as you roll the wheel along the floor
