Quick Overview

2-XL is a toy robot invented by Dr. Michael Freeman in the 1970s to give children a fun and educational toy. 2-XL's basic function was to teach, hence his name, "To Excell."

2-XL teaches in a way that is entertaining for both children and adults. 2-XL could ask questions, tell jokes, play games and puzzles.

2-XL: The Robot With A Personality

2-XL asks the listener questions. The listener chooses his or her answer by pressing one of four buttons on 2-XL's chest. 2-XL then gives the answer and praises the listener with encouragement or a joke or tells the listener he or she is wrong. It was an award winning educational toy.

It was an ugly but cute 12-inch tall robot that played specially-recorded 8-track tapes.
Each tape contained an educational subject and the "voice" of 2-XL.

2-XL was produced by Mego Corporation in New York from 1978-1981. Mego Corporation folded in 1981 and ended the production of 2-XL. 2-XL was redeveloped and reintroduced by Tiger Electronics in Vernon Hills, Illinois in 1992 with a new cassette format. This is an original from Mego.

2-XL teaches in a way that was entertaining for both children and adults. 2-XL could ask questions, tell jokes, play games and puzzles, and even had an interactive game called "Tri-Lex," which was a cross between checkers and tic-tac-toe.

He was not only educational and entertaining, but he was friendly too, and played some pretty cool music (although his singing, by his own confession, was pretty bad).
